LED lighting provides a more energy efficient solution to lighting problems in New York City. For both public buildings (schools, offices, hospitals) and for private commercial buildings, a conversion to LED lighting is both good for the environment and pays for its own costs. The Coalition to replace… will lobby the City Government to require conversion of all Fluorescent lights in New York City within a five year period. 

Specifically the coalition is seeking two city council actions.

The first would require all city agencies to replace all fluorescent lights with LED lights within a five year period. City agencies would be instructed to borrow the funds to do the conversion if they do not have sufficient funding in the city budget. This mechanism would allow them to repay the cost of conversion over electricity savings over a ten year period.

The second will seek from city council legislation that requires private commercial landlords to replace all fluorescent lighting with LED lighting within five years, and imposes fines
